  • A Hearts On Fire Review THREE HEARTS Set in 18th century Italy, Heloise West s If I Were Fire is a short story about two men who weren t supposed to meet that day But due to circumstances that included a shady criminal, they do Conte Salvesto Masello, who tries to keep up appearances of wealth but is selling his family heirlooms and barely holding onto his farm, meets Amadeo Neruccio wastrel, gambler and sodomite who is being sold into debt bondage and forced prostitution.Salvesto makes a hasty [...]

  • Nailed the setting and for a short story the plot was tight, action oriented and a touch of steam The rendering of the Italian city states feuds, the social hierarchy, and the pervasive sense of familia is well wrought Additionally, there was a charm to the language and characters, and the plot wasn t contrived at all A very enjoyable novella of 18th century Northern Italy.3.5 Stars

  • If I Were Fire is short and I m honestly quite surprised that the author was able to tell so much in such a short book Ms West knows how to find the right words and how to bring characters to life, she knows how to give shape to images, linking them to feelings and sensations The sense of time and place in this book is undeniable Reading it made me feel as though I had been transported to 18th century Tuscany of those uncertain times The only problem is that I want MORE

  • Gorgeous, adventurous, and lush with exquisite settings that transported me to a dark, moody Italy of old, I found this story truly enchanting The tale holds an amazing amount of depth and vision for a book of this length I found it well paced and tremendously satisfying and immediately rushed to see what else this new to me author had written But on to what I loved about this story The blurb captures the premise perfectly, but what really captivated me was the author s ability to sweep me fully [...]

  • Review STRWI picked this short by Heloise West, a new author for me, because as it was set in Italy, I couldn t say no It was delightful reading, really well done. The story between Salvesto and Amedeo takes place in the Siena of the 18th century.Salvesto Masello has just become Conte, he inherited the last villa among his father s possessions and all its debts He is having serious financial problems and while selling his silvers to try and save the failure his father made, he meets a young man w [...]

  • For a relatively short book, this story certainly packs a punch Not only does it make the Siena of the eighteenth century come alive grittiness and criminal underbelly included, but it is also a deeply emotional description of a count in financial trouble trying to save himself, and a young man who has lost his freedom and all hope The fact that Salvesto still rescues Amadeo and takes care of him as best he can made me respect him even Add an air of secrecy, the mystery around the count s fathe [...]

  • Copy provided to Bayou Book Junkie in exchange for a fair and honest review Count Salvesto Masello is about to sell the last of his mother s silver in the hope of saving his family s estate He s barely getting by as it is, seeing as he s been unable to locate the art treasures his father hid However, when he goes to sell the silver items to Guelfetto, he discovers that the evil man is about to sell a younger man to the Florentine bathhouse His sense of honor doesn t let him just collect his mone [...]

  • I received a free copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.Conte Salvesto Masello is trying to save his family villa from creditors by selling off his family heirlooms His father had gone mad and run up the debts Salvesto is trying to repay Even worse, Salvesto hasn t been able to locate some of the most valuable pieces of art work his father had hidden Now, Salvesto is force to sell off his mother s silver to one of the local pawnbrokers, Guelfetto While dealing with the pawnbroker [...]

  • The concept of this story seemed great but I just couldn t get into it It s a short story and seems to take place on three separate days, the day the MC S, Salvesto and Amadeo meet and two consecutive days weeks later after Amadeo heals The first day seems painfully slow and the last one rushed really see no connection between the two It seems the story was focused on the lost treasure than the relationship between the MC s I believe if the story was focused on the MC S relationship and less o [...]

  • So i loved this authors modern day book that I read and I love 18th century MM romance so when I saw the combo I jumped. However, this story just didn t work for me I m not sure if it was the setting of Italy, the type of charaters or what but I just couldn t get emotionally involved with any of it.I did enjoy hearing about the site, sounds and not too savory people of this part of the World And I loved that Amadeo was saved at the last minute by the Count And in return helped him in several diff [...]

  • Original review on Molly LollyThree stars This story had serious potential I enjoyed seeing how Salvesto saved Amadeo and then worked to make his life better His faith in Amadeo being able to turn his life around was wonderful However, everything was solved too easily and too quickly The villa is saved, the bad guy is defeated and the gang of thugs dispensed quickly and with little effort on the main characters parts There s a very sweet happy for now ending I liked the characters and would like [...]

  • Salvesto is desperately trying to save his lands and help his family and workers but cannot allow Amadeo to be sold into sexual slavery He gives up the money he would have received, for the last of the silver set, that he had taken to the pawnbroker to save Amadeo Amadeo has been a wastrel most of his life and gambled his way into the trouble he finds himself in.Because of the short length of the story, you don t get as much character development as you might like, but it is enjoyable and gives [...]

  • Full disclosure I beta read this before submission Heloise West did a fine job of setting the stage for her historical romance I don t know a ton about 18th century Italy, but the descriptions sounded authentic and added much to the flavor of the book Although novella length, If I Were Fire packs a punch with a satisfying amount of action and suspense, and is rounded out by likable MCs and a thoroughly despicable villain.

  • With this story, I was transported back to the 18th century with the author s picturesque descriptions The main characters were realistic and their coming together unique The suspense, intrigue, and deception laced through the story kept me interested to the very end and I look forward to reading stories by this author.

  • Romantic historicalFast paced love story between a nobleman and a common man set in post Renaissance Sienna The gay prodigal son returns with guilt over loss and finds a way to redeem his life when he falls in love Touching romance and definitely recommend.
