  • I received an ARC of Pretty In Ink by Lindsey Palmer from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. When I began reading Pretty In Ink by Lindsey Palmer, I thought the author had presented herself with quite a challenge The story is told by a number of people who all get their own portion of the book So, I wondered how Palmer was going to give each person her own voice separate from everyone else I thought it would be a daunting task until, as I got further into the book, I realized Palmer knew [...]

  • Loved it I knew I would enjoy this book because I had realized I enjoy books about the magazine industry after reading The Devil Wears Prada This book was somewhat similar with the main setting being the office for Hers magazine The story revolves around the lives of the women who work for Hers and each chapter is told from alternating workers POVs I thoroughly enjoyed this book because I felt so good reading once again about the magazine industry I didn t realize I had missed it so much As much [...]

  • Catty, but never unkind, this is a behind the scenes at a magazine book that s fun, smart, and also than a little bit true to life. The plot New editor in chief takes over and havoc happens on staff It s a familiar trope, but what Palmer does brilliantly is gets inside the minds and lives of the staffers Instead of spotlighting just one character, Palmer gives insight into everyone the interns, the managing editor, the beauty editor turned stay at home mom and does a great job handling their dif [...]

  • The world of Hers magazine takes a nose dive when their editor in chief suddenly finds herself fired, and a new Editor is put in her place Suddenly the work environment is one of uncertainty and hostility as employee s who ve been on the payroll for years find themselves fired, while other s quit, unhappy with the new regime, and find themselves ousted from their offices and sharing their job title with other people New staff who look down their nose at older staff find themselves disliked and [...]

  • Originally reviewed at Novel EscapesI truly enjoyed Pretty In Ink As a small warning though, it took me until half way through the book to figure out who was who There are a lot of characters all revolving around the chaos of a changing editor in chief for a women s magazine I was initially a bit put off by the multitude of voices because I couldn t keep their names straight However, I kept reading because I desperately wanted to know what happened with the new regime and Palmer s writing style [...]

  • Scenario at Hers magazine Long time editor in chief Louisa has just been fired and replaced by someone named Mimi All the women, and a few men, who have worked at the magazine for quite some time now are in constant fear that they will lose their jobs as well This book takes us behind the scenes and into the lives of most of the people on staff at Hers and allows us to view all the changes that are being made in their lives at work and outside of it These women and men can be downright catty whe [...]

  • I was provided a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest reviewThis book had its pros and cons, but overall I enjoyed the story and getting to know the characters The book begins with the Editor in Chief of a magazine getting fired From there we see the dynamics of the office as a new editor in chief comes in and proceeds to do things her way. Each chapter of this book is told from a different character s viewpoint I ll be honest I don t typically read the titles of chapters, s [...]

  • I m fairly certain the world of magazine creation can be busy and at times crazy At least I m sure it is Don t ask me, I don t work at one Pretty in Ink does kind of capture my imaginings of such work But not in a good way.The book suffers from two issues One of which is the chapter formats Each chapter changes to a different characters view point This has been done before of course and would not be a problem if they the author did not choose to have so many different characters to have a viewpo [...]

  • Pretty in Ink has everything you could want in a novel It s smart, though provoking, beautifully written, and heartfelt, but at the same time it s very entertaining and fun to read The characters are vivid and multi dimensional, and you really come to care about them, even the less likable ones Although the story takes place within the magazine industry as it struggles to survive in the internet age , the themes go beyond the inner workings of that industry and are relatable for anyone who is na [...]

  • Pretty in Ink is Lindsey Palmer s debut novel set in a publishing office where the Editor in Chief of a ladies magazine has just been ousted for a newer, cutthroat version of herself Think The Devil Meets Prada set in the magazine industry instead of the fashion world The story is told in chapters alternating between many characters points of view, which makes identifying with a protagonist difficult in the beginning For the first third of the book, I couldn t tell who I was supposed to be root [...]

  • Chick lit is such an underrated genre At first I was annoyed by how many different narrators there were, and it was hard to keep track of what was going on in everyone s lives, but it ended up actually being a neat device to contrast everyone s assumptions about each other to the reality I kept on being surprised, which was nice Not sure how I feel about the lesbian character I almost felt like she was written to be prudely than the others to avoid having to actually discuss her sexuality I did [...]

  • This review pertains to Pretty in Ink, by Lindsey Palmer Thanks to Kensington Book and Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review This is the debut novel from Lindsey Palmer and I can t wait to see what she comes up with next Pretty in Ink is everything I look for in a book It was funny, smart, thought provoking, and beautifully written The characters and the story jump off the page, making this a book that is so hard to put down Make sure you have some time to read this, because you wont [...]

  • These gals all have different perspectives on working and family The Boss Louisa is fired and now Mimi is the new boss who is very different The book is told from each person s perspective and it makes it interesting to see what each one is thinking and feeling Laura has been brought in as assistant to Mimi the new boss Some try to get to know Laura but she feels the hate Leah is the current assistant editor yet Mimi brings in a second person in the same position so they are co editors Leah is [...]

  • This was so fun I love books where I can get into the characters and they seem real It seems that so often these days I find myself reading books where I couldn t care less about what happens to the characters in the story Personally, my opinion is that one should be invested in the characters in order to be drawn into the story This book was told from the points of view of different characters and the author did wonderful job of really giving fresh voices to all of them. This was a fascinating g [...]

  • When the editor of Her Magazine is fired, the entire staff narrates the months of transition Mimi, the new editor comes in with some radical ideas, Leah, the associate editor hangs in there and the rest of the characters all add to the tale My favorite, Leah is the new mother of triplets who expects everything will turn our ok They will head in a new direction and Her will survive The people in this office are likable and well written The story is wonderful and seems true to life I think it is b [...]

  • Interesting insider look at a fashion magazineI almost didn t read this book The choice of breaking up the book into intertwining viewpoints annoyed me at first However, I am glad I stuck it out The characters were compelling Their stories pulled the reader in and held them to the very end The intern s story in particular, struck an empathetic nerve The author took us on a journey through the magazine publication world in the style of a readable Canterbury Tales A lot of loose ends were left, h [...]

  • Lindsey J Palmer gives us a fun, riveting read As the author artfully shares with us the colorful characters inner dialogues, Pretty in Ink takes us far beyond the characters bitingly humorous antics to a complex reading experience These are true to life people who are fighting for their jobs while trying to hold on to their self respect and respect for their co workers We laugh our way through this lively story, and we smile in recognition of the characters very familiar struggles We are left [...]

  • I couldn t put this book down As someone who works in a women dominated field, I found the characters hilarious and completely relatable Every office has em the troublemaker, the one who has one foot out the door, the nutcase, the one who will run over anyone who gets in her way It was fascinating how the author managed to get in their heads and reveal what makes them tick I highly recommend if you re looking for a great feel good read

  • Engaging, well researched, beautifully written and lots of fun, I thoroughly enjoyed Pretty in Ink It tells the story of a New York based magazine in the midst of a restructuring, with its accompanying drama and dysfunction The reader gets insight into many different vantage points, so each character is portrayed in a rich way and has a unique voice in the tumult Very witty and real Lindsey Palmer is quickly becoming a favorite author

  • Pretty in Ink is both entertaining and beautifully written Lindsey s characters come to life as she takes you inside the high pressure semi dysfunctional sometimes catty always funny women s magazine workplace that she knows so well I rose and fell with the ensemble cast of characters successes and failures This is a great read for the beach, for new yorkers or ex NYers or anyone looking to spend time with a rich group of characters figuring it all out.

  • my son s teacher wrote this book and gave him a copy i was surprised how much he liked it and having read other similar books, i thought it was easily equal to the devil wore prada i liked the conceit that the magazine was undergoing personnel changed as a working mom, a lot of the dilemmas raised rang fairly true.i thought this was a great first book written by a lovely woman.

  • Lindsey does a miraculous job capturing a witty, hilarious, yet heartwarming glimpse into the editorial world I could not put this book down finished it in 2 days, and my husband kept wondering why I was laughing out loud every 10 minutes Highly recommended to anyone looking to break into the industry, or even for those who are already part of the industry.

  • I received a free copy of this book from First Reads This was a perfect old school chick lit book, reminiscent of Sophie Kinsella and Marian Keyes It was a great beach read, not heavy or angsty, no crazy love triangles I thought the character development was well done and the story moved nicely.

  • There are a lot of characters in this book, and I initially had a hard time remembering who was who However, each narrator has her own distinct voice and story told in an easy, conversational style A fun look at the inner workings of a magazine and office politics.

  • Loved this book Couldn t put it down Intern chapter almost made me cry Loved the satire and it s really not too far off from what I remember the magazine world being like I found myself relating to the working moms in the book as well.

  • Have you ever wondered what goes on in the offices of those glossy women s magazines Palmer, a former editor, offers the scoop in her hilarious and heartwarming debut novel I can t wait to read her second book

  • This delightful book is the perfect mixture of sweet and sassy I devoured it Lindsey J Palmer has created a smart, fun novel with clever, painstakingly real women at its center With this joyful ride, I can t wait for Palmer s next book

  • Great read Great read and great characters This book was totally different than anything I am used to reading but I enjoyed it I normally prefer murder mysteries.

  • I have not read chik lit in a long time but i really enjoyed this book It reminds me of the stories my friends that work in corporate say about the backstabbing, cruelty u get among ur coworkers
