About " Emilia Pardo Bazán Paul O'Prey "

  • Emilia Pardo Bazán Paul O'Prey

Emilia Pardo Baz n was a Galician author and scholar from Galicia She is known for bringing naturalism to Spanish literature, for her detailed descriptions of reality, and for her role in feminist literature of her era.Her first novel, Pascual L pez 1879 , is a simple exercise in fantasy of no remarkable promise, though it contains good descriptive passages of romance It was followed by a striking story, Un viaje de novios 1881 , in which a discreet attempt was made to introduce into Spain the methods of French realism The book caused a sensation among the literary cliques, and this sensation was increased by the appearance of another naturalistic tale, La tribuna 1885 , wherein the influence of mile Zola is unmistakable Meanwhile, the writer s reply to her critics was issued under the title of La cuestion palpitante 1883 , a clever piece of rhetoric, but of no special value as regards criticism or dialectics. The best of Emilia Pardo Baz n s work is embodied in Los pazos de Ulloa 1886 , the painfully exact history of a decadent aristocratic family A sequel, with the significant title of La madre naturaleza 1887 , marks a further advance in the path of naturalism. She was also a journalist, essayist and critic She died in Madrid.

  • I m usually very anti 19t Century Literature My Personal Hell is shelves and shelves of books populated only by novels by Charles Dickens and his contemporaries That s why I was completely shocked by this book, which I ended up adoring, and would read again, had I the time.It s a masterwork of the Naturalist literary movement in terms of style and structure historically, it paints a vivid picture of the decadence and decline of Spain especially the decaying aristocracy and the corruption of the [...]

  • I adored this Priests, feudal aristocrats, bastards, the deep countryside, nineteenth century Spanish politics these are all some of my favourite themes But this is utterly brilliant both funny and unsettling by turns The plot and the characters are immersive and compelling, and I was borne along so happily by the absorbing torrent of the narrative that I read the whole book in a single day, and almost in a single sitting Hugely enjoyable.

  • 3.5Review originally posted on A Skeptical Reader. The House of Ulloa follows the strange ongoings in the house of Ulloa as Juli n Alvarez attempts to bring it back to some semblance of normalcy The novel is gothic but also clearly not There are descriptions of the mansion and its residents that give you a feel of the gothic but there isn t anything supernatural of the kind happening And yet, it still retains a fascinatingly vivid atmosphere.Baz n has a splendid writing style that is easy to drow [...]

  • Born in Galicia in 1851, Emilia Pardo Baz n was a leading exponent of Spanish Naturalism and a key figure in 19th century Spanish literature per se Her 1886 novel, The House of Ulloa is generally considered to be her masterpiece My old Penguin Classics copy had been sitting on the shelves for a couple of years, but Grant s enthusiastic reaction to the book on Twitter following its recent inclusion in the Pocket Penguins range prompted me to dust it off for Spanish Lit Month now extended to Augus [...]

  • 3.5 stars I ve been reading this since last year B Now that that joke s aside we ll begin the review The story at face value was incredibly enjoyable, easy to get through, the translation I believe was done well, and the language was accessible I also think that if I had known about Spain s history prior to reading this book I would ve gotten much out of it but me being the least knowledgeable person in the world, did not so all the parts that discussed politics flew over the top of my head an [...]

  • An excellent and short read There is a declining family, just as in Buddenbrooks, and yet the feeling is completely different throughout Instead of Pietist Germans, we have Catholic Spaniards Galicians Instead of ennui and meaninglessness, there is passion and bold ignorance This book also has the advantage of including at least some characters that are easy to like, as well as some of the most charming scenes Although the concerns with money and marriage are central here, just as in many Englis [...]

  • A very odd little book, but wildly enjoyable priestsploitation, plus gothicising HORROR, but the very next paragraph is broad satire or slapstick, so the gothic becomes funny And I assume that s intentional It moves very quickly for the 19th century, which helps Even the clunky oh, this book is kind of winding down too soon I know, politics subplot twist ended up quite being quite fun Anything which just ignores genre boundaries like this is always fun than even the best books that stick to the [...]

  • A 19th century Spanish novel that has all the elements of a Gothic novel and yet isn t quite Gothic Perhaps because of the lack of proper hysteria or just because the novel is interested in the character and development of its hero for lack of a better appellation Julian, the novel mostly feels like a novel with some Gothic elements and, on occasion, like a gentle affectionate parody of the genre I can t quite put my finger on where it falls on the Gothic spectrum, which explains why this revie [...]

  • READ IT FOR UNI.3,5 actually.I honestly liked it, even if it was a required read I find it to be enjoyable, and easy to read The characters were wide, and they were described really good.My only problem with this was some really slow parts, in which the writer describes with too much detailes the politic system in the pazos.

  • I don t like to read books for school because I rarely enjoy them, but I m sure this is a book I would enjoy if I read it again in the future without any pressure.

  • An excellently told story Why haven t I heard before of Emilia Pardo Baz n And Penguin Classics, where s the rest of her prolific work Atmospheric description of the wilds of Galicia A nice cross between the realist and the Gothic strands of 19thC fiction Plot like an old acquaintance, and yet different I thought a lot about Emily Bronte I thought, if this were Stendahl there d be an affair It s a short novel and she doesn t waste a word, even in those lush descriptions of nobles houses in a sta [...]

  • In the manner of a Gothic novelist Bazan explores the darker side of the human psyche, what one might term sin in an earlier age They are all here, gluttony, lust, pride etc Yet in the midst of all this debauchery the figure of the priest father Julian stands as an example of a finer version of mankind.A wonderful tale of sin and redemption, and lasting enmity.
