  • A sailor pal recommended this book, so on a recent visit to BN, I steeled myself to plunk down 25 for the pleasure of paper I searched the shelves Then I got distracted This cost me an extra 30 when I picked up a collection of essays about technology and security then couldn t put it back down While on this tangent, I might as well mention that a few days later while browsing some web news, a targeted sidebar add suggested I might enjoy Advanced Security Strategies in Virtualized Data Centers Fo [...]

  • The title implies that the billionaire and the mechanic had about an equal share in winning the America s Cup Nothing could be further from the truth, at least the way it comes out of the book Without giving away too much, it is not entirely clear what role did the mechanic play in the story of the America s cup homecoming, other than being a figurehead of Larry s challenge yes, aside from having an obliging pet yacht club commodore, Larry got into the bargain a nice guy that can talk to him wit [...]

  • This book took me a while to finish, but it was mainly due to interruption by other books that I was reading or writing In the end I m glad that I stuck it out and made it to the end I m a fan of non fiction and Ms Guthrie did an excellent job getting inside the story of the Larry Ellison s infatuation with the America s Cup You really don t get too much of the Mechanic, but hey, he was really just along for the ride Larry is far readable He has lots of money and likes to use it And by the way, [...]

  • I actually bought this for a present for someone a pretty poor choice it turns out Boring, sycophantic drivel from someone who appears to be paid to create a story out of a catchy title If I took anything away from this book it was an insight into what it takes to become a billionaire It appears a willingness to do pretty much anything to stack the cards in your favour, ignoring tradition and being disruptive, and being a perpetual self publicist are all prerequisites The book does not do justic [...]

  • Great read even for someone who knows nothing about sailing of the America s cup It was interesting learning about Larry Ellison I enjoyed seeing a little bit of the personal side of him It was especially interesting to read after going to San Fran to watch one of the races It is wild and something I would love to learn about and watch in the future Go USA

  • There are some people with extraordinary egos Larry Ellison is one of them This book is a little strong on the myth making The title, for example, is largely concocted and has little to do with what happened It gives the impression of some uber millionaire accidently running into a quaint craftsman in the manner of a Grimm s fairytale and together beating the elitist clique of international yachters through gumption and hard work That isn t the true story of the 2009 and 2013 America s Cup races [...]

  • This story captures how Larry Ellison the Billionaire Oracle and Norbert Bajurin manager of a radiator repair shop captured and defended The America s Cup It is a thrilling story filled with success, failure, litigation, sailing, engineering and balls to the wall competition It is obvious that the people involved have feet of clay as opposed to the engineers and astronauts in Guthrie s How to Make a Spaceship this makes the story less and inspiring.

  • Wish I d read this before this year s America s Cup really interesting background, even for a non sailor Guthrie sometimes goes off on a tangent, and I thought some of it could have been better organised, but overall it s an exciting read, particularly the end Even though I knew how the 34th America s Cup ended, I still couldn t put the book down

  • Sailing has evolved to flying over the water Great story about recent history of the Americas Cup, Larry Ellison s obsession, and the engineering and mechanics double meaning here of sailing Intriguing.

  • This story was chosen by a club member who is a sailor I have no sea legs and get seasick easily, so I groaned inwardly upon hearing what our next read would be It took me a while to get into it, but I ended up finding it interesting enough to finish and recommend.

  • Too much about the billionaire and not enough detail about how the sailing races operate A lot of sailing terms were used and not explained well enough for a non sailor to understand what was happening The Steve Jobs section felt out of place, I understand the two were friends, but it was an unnecessary part of the narrative Would have liked mechanic and less billionaire.

  • The Billionaire and the Mechanic In the novel the billionaire and the mechanic is about the worlds fastest boats racing for the worlds oldest trophy and how Oracle beat all odds and had the biggest comeback in the history of the Americas cup The novel is written by Julian Guthrie and she does a good job telling about the history of the cup and the background of both Larry Ellison the billionaire and Norbert Bajor the Mechanic. The novel is very exciting and informational because the fact that boa [...]

  • I recently read The Billionaire and the Mechanic by Julian Guthrie I read this book because it is about the America s Cup which is something I very much want to compete in one day It is about Larry Ellison and his Journey to winning the Cup The America s Cup is the oldest trophy in international sport, it was first awarded in 1851 This trophy has been historically very expensive to win so naturally a billionaire like Larry Ellison would be perfect to support a campaign for this It just so happen [...]

  • Even though I knew going in that Larry Ellison s Oracle team won the America s Cup twice, in fact I still could not put the book down. The story of the near fatal Sydney Hobart race that starts the book sets the pace for a dramatic and detailed look at the evolution of the America s Cup contests over the last 20 some years For someone who knew virtually nothing about the technology and the politics and very little about the personalities involved, this was an eye opening and exciting read The mul [...]

  • Compelling and fascinating account of how the America s Cup team came together to bring it back to the US the round before the most recent race which will make for a great sequel The politics of the local SF yachting scene drives Larry Ellison to this little club run by a guy who owns a radiator shop All of what goes into building a boat that meets the rules, getting the best team of sailors, figuring out what are the best leaders of people vs sailors vs strategists is amazing And it all takes p [...]

  • We were fortunate to see some of last year s America s Cup in San Francisco but didn t read this until just this summer The story of how Larry Ellison came to be obsessed with international sailboat racing and colludes with a salt of the earth radiator mechanic to bring the Cup back to the US where it belongs is enthralling It s all about speed, high technology, daredevil racing, wild parties, sparring egomaniacs, and the quest to win the longest running trophy in sport Ellison is an amazing cha [...]

  • The story of Larry Ellison s bids to win the America s Cup and resulting involvement with the Golden Gate Yacht Club is presented in clean, journalistic prose It s a fast, engaging read that does not try to create suspense around well known historical events, but teases with judicious pacing and just enough detail Reading it just as the Luis Vuiton cup finals were starting in the summer of 2013 gave me, as a viewer and sailor, far deeper understanding of the action on and behind the racecourse U [...]

  • This book literally taught me everything I know about yacht racing It presents a sympathetic, human view of Larry Ellison of Oracle who does not always have the best press The story of how a blue collar yacht club teamed with Oracle Racing in the fights for the America s Cup makes compelling reading whether you know port from starboard The pages on Ellison s long time friendship with Steve Jobs add interest as well Along the way we see and hear a lot about a level of wealth which is incomprehens [...]

  • InspiringThis book takes you to places most of us never go You are plunged in the intimate world of the wealthiest people on earth that becomes even rarified by the fact they made the money by using their own brains, hard work, blood, sweat and tears Billionaires and sailors at this level of competition are as competitive as the best athletes on earth in any sport With this book, you get a rare look inside these very private lives Who could imagine spending hundreds of millions of dollars on a [...]

  • Although I don t race any and I think the America s Cup has lost some of its allure when the event switched to boats that do not in any way resemble boats that most sailors are familiar with, this book did provide a unique perspective on what goes on behind the scenes of the Cup I thought the author did tend toward the realm of hagiography in relation to Ellison especially in the portions of the book after Team Oracle finally won the Cup and the subsequent defense I also wanted of Norbert Baju [...]

  • Well, that was fun at least However, a better title would have been Life is Good When You re Larry Ellison If You Can t Beat Em, Buy Em And what s with the extended tribute to Steve Jobs It s like a chapter length promotion for Isaacson s book If you like reading about wealthy playboys who run in the coolest circles, have nothing better to do with their millions, and who win all the time, this book is for you It s like Gatsby without the moral hangups But, like I stated at the beginning, it was [...]

  • An excellent read for someone who knows nothing about the America s Cup, or someone who knows a ton about the Cup Guthrie provides a great historical overview along with behind the scenes details I d recommend this book for anyone interested in learning about the America s Cup in general, or learning the politics, demands, design aspects, and lawsuits of the past 20 years I really hope that Guthrie writes a book just on the races of 2013 Cup

  • Loved this Very entertaining and informative all the way through I couldn t wait to get back to it to find out where it was going next I also enjoyed learning about Larry Ellison s relationships, both business and friendship, especially his relationship with Steve Jobs I only wish I d read it before the America s Cup 34 this year, but then I may have been really nervous when I got to meet Jimmy Spithill and Sir Ben Ainsley.

  • I ve told Carrie that i want to join a yacht club, but not sure its going to happen This is basically a story of the Billionaire and how he had limited contact and a contractual need to partner with a Mechanic the commodore of San Francisco s blue collar yacht club Fun overview of the hunt to reclaim the cup for the US and does a good job of making the sailing scenes exciting The storyline following the commodore was minimal, sad, and never got wrapped up.

  • Much like sailing itself the book is as much about life as it is about the sport For these who see this sport, any sport, solely as recreation the Billionaire and the Mechanic reminds us of the importance of challenging ourselves, daring to compete, and being willing to risk losing as the ultimate path to winning A great read for sailors and non sailors alike.

  • Probably a book best for sailors, but there is plenty of drama,, business and family dynamics to appeal to a broader audience I came away very impressed with Larry Ellison I did not know that he was Steve Job s best friend Larry s eulogy for Jobs near the end of the book was beautiful I really liked Guthrie s writing.

  • I really enjoyed this book It was a quick read, maybe owing to the fact that since a friend introduced me to America s Cup racing in college, I have followed it ever since This was a great exploration of how Larry Ellison helped bring the Cup back to the US after it was lost to New Zealand, and the technology required to be competitive Highly recommended

  • You don t have to love Larry Ellison to love this book and you might even come away with less of a one dimensional attitude toward him , which is exceptionally well written a page turner in fact, amazingly and well researched Fascinating story and a great read to appreciate what goes into competing in the America s Cup.

  • A great story for anybody interested in building and running teams, and or sailing The pursuit of the cup and the victory in 2010 was impressive, but the after story and subsequent victory in 2013makes this story eve better.
