  • If I m going to rag on guys like Grisham for having a formula for what they write, then I suppose I ought to do so for Piers Anthony, as well Harpy Thyme, as the 17th book in the Xanth series, is enjoyable enough, but the parts that make it fun are the parts that don t feel like they ve been done 16 times before. In Harpy Thyme, Gloha the winged Goblin Harpy crossbreed sets out to find true love, and begins with of course a trip to the Good Magician That was also the inception of the plot for at [...]

  • I normally give a book a 100 page test, but I honestly just couldn t with this one, which I fear will hurt the credibility of my review, but I will let these quotes from the book speak for me After all, she had so much to offer the right man, she hoped She glanced down at her fancy little figure, just to be sure IS THIS A JOKE Believe me, dear, your youth will last long enough if you keep your fine little figureAnd hide your intelligence, too IS THIS A JOKE TOO But in a moment she suffered a cha [...]

  • This is the seventeenth glorious Xanth book in this series, and we again encounter someone who really needs a mate Gloha is the only being of her kind in all of Xanth, the wondrous offspring of a mating between a harpy and goblin And as she grew she often wondered if, when and where the one being she would find to love and to love her So, as always, it s off to Good Magician Humfrey Natch In a quest for her true love she is thrust into perilous quest of puns and danger aplenty in search of love, [...]

  • Xanth is a fantasy novel that is based almost entirely on wordplay, specifically puns The series occupies a strange space between silly and weird Anthony has some odd opinions on themes, such as sex, racism, prejudice, growing up, and the use of magic in everyday life The writing vacillates between heavy handed condescending to extended analysis of magic, science, and the application of the rules of Xanth Some love it, some hate it I personally thought it was a strange read but harmless, althoug [...]

  • I enjoyed this episode of adventures in Xanth It was great to see some characters from past stories return for further adventures.

  • Another pun filled book from Piers Anthony This was a good book and of course, the reader could surmise the outcome early, but that didn t detract from enjoying the book On to the next one.

  • I frequently use this book as an example of how even popular authors often have their covers skewed by the Marketing Troll Gloha the Goblin Harpy crossbreed is supposed to be beautiful, especially considering the stock she comes from, but depicting her as a blonde white girl is pretty silly.Anyway, goblins and harpies don t often, you know, procreate, even in Xanth So Gloha is lonely And of course this loneliness takes the form of OMG I need a mate So she does what all Xanth characters do when t [...]

  • Book 17 of the Xanth Series finds Gloha going to the Good Magician s castle to get the answer as to who is her true love As a crossbreed of a goblin and harpy, two species that have been fighting for centuries, she is the only one of her kind Except for her brother Harglo, but he does not count in her search She gets through the three challenges, and gets an answer from the Good Magician to see his second son Dissatisfied with the answer, she nonetheless starts off in search for this person Alon [...]

  • I found my hardbound copy many, many years ago That it was in a bargain bin should have been a warning, but it was in good condition and I m into fantasy so I bought it That was a mistake It took me months to finish, often finding reasons to procrastinate Although I initially had high hopes given the attractive cover and seemingly interesting summary at the back, it quickly proved to be consistently boring Parts intended to be light humor were shallow and corny.Swallowing my disappointment, I so [...]

  • The 17th tale in the Xanth series, Harpy Thyme involves the very lonely Gloha, the only female harpy goblin in Xanth who is desperately in want of her very own male harpy goblin Naturally, since this is the pattern for all Xanth tales, Gloha undergoes the ritual set of riddles so she can finally get to the Good Magician who will solve all of her problems. And, naturally, the Good Magician the cantankerous old boot sends her out on a journey to find his second son whom no one knows existsexceptybe [...]

  • Gloha is the only creature of her kind in the land of Xanth As a goblin harpy crossbreed in a world where goblins and harpies really don t often do that, she finds herself lonely for companionship, and goes to see Magician Humfrey to find connections she can believe in On a quest, she meets a winged centaur who was transformed as a punishment, and she meets Magician Trent, who can transform creatures into other creatures Somewhere here is a clue to help Gloha find love, but how will she know At [...]

  • This book follows Gloha a harpy goblin cross as she struggles to find herself a man She is the only harpy goblin cross in Xanth so does what any girl would do, go to good Magician Humphrey to ask the question The quest starts from there She teams up with Magician Trent, a giant, Marrow bones and a demon and they travel the length of Xanth to full fill a whole range of questions.I feel like I have grown out of Xanth novels I used to love them, all the puns, the funny characters, the mad story lin [...]

  • I enjoyed this one a lot than the two immediately preceding it Howeverere were times when I thought that Gloha was less naive than she was just plain old air headed, and that did drive me just a little bit crazy She just didn t listen to those who had experience than she did, but I suppose that has always been the way of teenagers They have to learn for themselves, even if it means they get themselves into a world of trouble on the way.Harpy Thyme contains what is simultaneously the absolute W [...]

  • That s the nature of courage to do what you have to do, without yielding to fear Every sensible person feels fear on occasion, but only cowards let it govern them Anthony has a pretty set formula for his Xanth novels with the sheer number of them, I m not surprised.Lead character questions trip to Good Magician Humphrey GMH adventure answer Gloha Will I ever find true love GMH Xanth adventure with Magician Trent, Cynthia winged centaur well, I don t want to spoil it.I do love the adventures wher [...]

  • Gloha is looking for a husband, and Magician Trent is looking to simply fade out with a bunch of other well known characters How can those two quests come together Well, with the Good Magician involved, of course they are Kind of a surprising romance in this one, you don t really guess who Gloha will end up with There s the whole Metria Veleno situation too, which is good because it settles an otherwise mobile character.Enjoyed this one, just wish I wasn t working so much so I could have had con [...]

  • I read this as a kid, along with most of the other Xanth novels, and it was my first real foray into fantasy literature Re reading it now as an adult, I notice why some people claim Piers Anthony is a pedophile There are rather sexualized scenes throughout the book, often involving young girls and older men Despite this, I enjoyed the book It is funny and entertaining, imaginative and immersive.

  • I liked this one better than Demons Don t Dream, though less than A Spell for Chameleon. It s still very punny, but I guess it doesn t sound as forced Then again, the reappearance of Magician Trent could have been a little bit of a bias.

  • I found an old notebook with a list of everything I was reading in the early nineties I had a system of 0 3 stars going and gave this one no stars I don t remember what my system meant, but I think no stars was a baseline ok, and any stars beyond that meant it was than ok I think I was over Xanth by then but still reading the books anyway.

  • Overall, I liked the book The story was good, and the characters were good The only thing that irritated me was all of the little sayings that Anthony used in the beginning of the book, and then somewhat still throughout the book I really think there were way too many in this one, especially at the beginning.

  • This was my favorite book of the Xanth series And that s because I loved Gloha s character She was adorable I m sure many people can relate to feeling lonely and as if you don t belong I know I did at one time I have to reread this book I remember smiling when I read this it gave me happy feelings.

  • My favorite part was the last quarter of the book with the Jack and the beanstalk play and the happily ever after type ending It s interesting that the winged horse on the cover really has nothing to do with the main story plot, besides a minor appearance in the beginning.

  • When reading a long series it can get boring, drag on Xanth doesn t do that And it is because of books like this Main Characters in Xanth never die, they fade out So when the Good Magician gives old Magician Trent, ex king of xanth, some youth elixir, he s ready to go again.

  • This was an enjoyable book, far better than recent books Gloha is a fun character.I never liked Metria as a character before, but it seems like she s taking a new direction now so might become tolerable.

  • A cute book that was better than some of its predecessors It feels like the puns are happening and with each book, and it s hard to pay attention when whole pages at a time are listing punny plants or magical effects and in some cases it takes away from the plot of the book.

  • Got bored Wasn t bad, but couldn t finish Went and read spoilers after decision to quit was made, and I think I made the right choice.

  • Some times we all feel like we are the only ones in the world Well, what if you really are the only one like you in the world

  • I have been a fan if Piers Anthony for a very long ands I love all of the Zanth books I think there are like forty or so.

  • Gloha Goblin Harpy is looking for her ideal man Only problem is she is the only winged goblin in the whole land of Xanth How is she to find her mate
